Maharaj Singh, played by Shammi Kapoor, is a proud horse racing enthusiast and owner of Derby-winning stallions. He lives in a palatial farmhouse with his wife Rukmini and young son. One day, dacoits invade to steal his horses, and Maharaj Singh fights them, killing the leader’s son. Maan Singh, the head dacoit, swears to take revenge on Maharaj Singh and abducts his young son, Chimpoo. While Maharaj Singh and his wife, Rukmini, live in anguish for losing their only son , many years later, a young man named Badal, essayed by Amitabh Bachchan, comes into their lives. He lies to them that he is their son, and they believe him.

Their daughter and both Maharaj Singh and his wife are very happy. Fate plays a trick: Badal isn’t their son. He falls in love with their daughter Sunita and confesses his true identity – he’s a convicted jailbird, not their son Chimpoo, but an impersonator. By then Rukmini is ailing and is on her deathbed.

The film is inspired by O. Henry’s short story “A Double-Dyed Deceiver”. Interestingly, the script was previously adapted in the 1960 film “Bombai Ka Babu” starring Dev Anand. Notably, Saira Banu played Shammi Kapoor’s daughter in this film, while 14 years prior, she romanced him in the film “Junglee”.
