On April 12th 2026, the world of Indian music fell into profound silence with the passing away of our legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle at the age of 92. She was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital a day prior for chest infection and respiratory issues and succumbed to multi organ failure, marking the end of a golden era in Indian Music.
The Melody Queen, Asha Tai as she is affectionately known in the industry, was born in 1933 in an illustrious Mangeshkar family. She began her professional journey at the age of nine. Asha Bhosle initially stood in the shadow of her elder sister the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar who was four years elder to her born in 1929. Asha Bhosle was born in a musical dynasty, the daughter of the famous classical singer and theatre actor Deenanath Mangeshkar. She along with her siblings followed their father’s footsteps and went to become the pillars of the Indian film industry.
Her siblings included the eldest and the iconic singer the Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar, whose career in the film industry spanned across seven decades. Meena Khadikar the second eldest worked as a playback singer for Marathi and Hindi cinema and also composed music for several films. Asha Bhosle was the third sibling who was renowned for her incredible range and versatility became the melody queen of the film industry breaking records with number of songs at the studio recordings. Usha Mangeshkar the fourth sibling gained fame for her playback singing particularly for Marathi cinema and her contribution towards devotional music. The youngest and the only brother of the Mangeshkar sister, Hridaynath Mangeshkar’s sisters, a highly respected music composer and singer is known for his complex yet classical rooted compositions.
Asha Bholse was thus raised in a household where music was their primary language. The Mangeshkar siblings soon carved and shaped the sound and the music of the Indian cinema for over a half a century and created a legacy that will remain unparallel in the history of the music in India.

As we pay homage to the departed great soul, we cannot ignore the coincidence. The two famous Mangeshkar sisters, Lata was four years older than Asha. Both died at the age of 92, both expired on a Sunday bringing grief to the melody lovers, the music industry and the entire film industry to whom they gave their best of their life. Both Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle passing away; India is in grief today as they have truly lost two gems and two of its most beautiful voices. There never will be a repeat.
