What Is Hurting Bollywood Casting The Most?

The primary factors that mostly have impacted the Bollywood casting.

Nepotism:

The casting got affected due to favoritism to a family who are closely connected to the film industry for decades. The casting couch is also a barrier that created a significant barrier for outside talent and that led to the favoritism.

Individual with family ties in the film industry who have established themselves have easier access and preferential treatment regardless of their acting inability. This limits the opportunities to the outsiders who may be more talented and may not have such connections. This has led to their frustration and the potential revolutionary change in the film industry. The audience too have become increasingly critical of this practice and also affects the box office performance of the star kid led films.

The Casting Couch :

Is one of the very negative factors in the film industry which refers to the demand of sexual favors in exchange for a role in the film or a career in the film industry. It’s more than an exploitation issue with many actors and actresses who have gone through this to get a foot hold in the film industry. We have had both share their experiences in a subtle way of the unethical ways, forcing the aspiring artists to compromise with the demand and losing their integrity or step back and take the risk of losing an opportunity.

Lack of Transparency in the casting :

The nature of the casting process is particularly hit as the short listing of actors have made it easy to be prejudice and partial and have influenced the decision makers. These decisions lack a clear or a merit-based criteria and allows unfair practices that have been persistent in the film industry.

Gender Inequality and Ageism :

The industry has recently witnessed the criticism for casting older male actors opposite younger actresses. Gender inequality has also encouraged limiting roles to women in the film industry regardless of their talent and looks only because they have reached a certain age. While a male actor has been given more opportunity to grab the cream of roles, a leading role and do not generally jump into the band wagon of character artists like the woman in the industry adapt to supporting roles. The pivotal roles are easily taken over by the middle-aged actor who may be 60 or 70 and is expected to be leading opposite a young actress. There is a general debate on the gender inequality and ageism which exists in the film industry mainly Bollywood.

Other specific challenges faced by outsiders in the film industry. The most common struggles often include the lack of established networks and the new comers heavily rely on the word-of-mouth referrals or look up to for mentors and opportunities.

Many creative fields are in high demand but rely on the unpaid internships or have no means for the required expensive qualifications thus the industry has favored those with the existing financial support.

Bias and cultural misfit – Hiring processes have unconsciously favored the candidates who are from similar backgrounds or have family in the industry.

Another difficulty is demonstrating their credibility as they have not created a brand of themselves or have their standing in their resume or may not have the kind of experience they are good at. Its more often as struggle to find a foot in the industry. Industry has specific and cultural expectations and career progression paths are often led through unwritten rules and norms which is most likely an insider hence leaving the outsiders for which he is at a disadvantage.
