Bollywood projects are currently facing a problem besides criticism for few of the important elements that are primarily the causes.
Let’s take a look at some of the important aspects in the film making that is lacking.
Storyline and Scripts
First and foremost, it’s the lack of fresh storylines. It’s the lack of originality and compelling storylines. We have an over dose of biopics which is based on a certain individual or an incident or an event that took place. There is a disconnect due to the preference by the audience for the script that is not appealing to them.
Lack in the original story or script is also because films are now many a times, a remake of old films or remake of regional films or a remake of a foreign films that the audience have probably seen the original version and lose interest. Instead, the best way for successful Bollywood films is by developing fresh stories and look into what genre is enjoyed by the audience.
Indian society has urban and rural segments and many a times films made are not relatable or the content is not catered to the particular class of people. For example, a niche or an elite class of urban audience may enjoy a certain film but will fail to reflect the wider audience of the Indian society and hence the mass appeal is affected.
Focus on talent which is lacking and nepotism
In the films today there is a critical point on casting star kids with very little acting prowess. The star kid joins the film industry with a lot of hope and are trained to be actors or film makers etc, but they lack the talent that is expected in acting. The culture of nepotism exists which is an overemphasized which is focused solely on family member of a reputed and a famous actor or actress. This gives them unfair advantages over a more talented actor to be.
Favoritism is also a broader term that is given an undue priority impacting the fairness and the morales.
Music and Dialogue Delivery
Unlike the classic Bollywood films or the films of the earlier era, the modern films often lack of original music. There are more of remixed songs with very little relevance to the plot. The dialogues are artificial that don’t appeal to the audience and do not create an impact on the viewers like the previously made films in the earlier era.
Female Leads in powerful and complex roles
Bollywood consistently boasts of strong female leads who have delivered their powerful performances v/s the stereotype who showcase their strength and bravery.
Some of the very popular protagonist with compelling stories led by female actors such as Kangana Ranaut for Queen, Vidya Balan for The Dirty Picture, Rani Mukerji in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, Deepika Padukone in Padmaavat and Piku or Alia Bhatt in Gangubai Kathiawadi or Highway.
Lack of Wholesome Entertainment:
The recently made films of the millennium lack a wholesome entertainment. The films that were once upon a time a staple of Bollywood which provided emotions, humor, compatible pairing on screen is lacking. Therefore, there are no films that are made with a mix of emotions or serve as an entertainment for all age groups.
Increase and rise in terror and crime movies is the focus of the filmmakers leaving very little hope of entertainment to the majority of the audiences. Too much of crime related movies, or the war movies or biopics of war heroes and as much as it’s welcome to honor the brave hearts, it is becoming a habit now. More than the variety of films that were made in the past. Now its more of a stereotype and audience know what to expect and turn to waiting for the OTT to release the film in a couple of weeks after its theatrical run.
Budgeting and Exorbitant Fees paid to Actors
The realistic budget is lacking due to the exorbitant actor’s fees and the inflated budgets that are chalked out which in turn puts immense pressure on the filmmaker and missed out to perform as a blockbuster and the recovery of their costs which has high risks hence mid budget films are getting more popular with limited creative risks, due to which the content driven films are not viable for a theatrical run and they are mostly released on the OTT platforms.
Attention to the detailing:
Last but not the least is Attention to the detailing: Audience have noted the technical aspects like VFX, editing and accuracy in period films is lacking suggesting a rushed approach by the production house.
Global Collaboration
Focus is on domestic market by Indian producers primarily due to the content created which is catered for the local audience hence the significant returns is lesser that what it would be with a global reach.
A large portion of Indian cinema depicts the local culture, traditions and social dynamics hence the story crafting is not prioritized to the global collaboration. The themes or the narrative style or the emotional melodrama with songs and dance sequences which the global audience are not familiar with and unlike the universal action or family stories the context does not reach to the global masses. Therefor the Bollywood lacks the robust distribution in the international markets as compared to the Hollywood film distribution. It is also because of the budgets for major Bollywood films is still significantly much lower than that of a large-scale Hollywood film production. This has impacted to attract the global viewers.
