The Soul of the 70s: R.D. Burman’s Melodies That Made Bollywood Dance

Whenever the topic of discussion is Bollywood music, then there is always mention of some legendary musicians. One of them is Rahul Dev Burman – our beloved Pancham Da. He crafted not just music, but pure feelings. The magic he used to create with simple harmonica and a glass bottle, today’s musicians are struggling to create even with autotune.

R.D. Burman was born in Calcutta. He got music as a legacy, as his father Sachin Burman and mother Meera Burman were also famous musicians. As per reports, when he used to cry, the sound came in five melodies—thus he was called Pancham. Burman grew up learning music from a very young age. He was proficient in many instruments like tabla, harmonica, and flute. He was also interested in western music, and later he created great compositions by mixing Indian and western music.

When RD Burman crafted those soulful melodies, the whole of Bollywood used to dance. From ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ to ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja’ and ‘Mehbooba Mehbooba’, he made every tune a tagline that still lingers in people’s minds.

His music was never just a song; it was a complete mood. Be it romance, thriller, or funky party numbers – Pancham Da had an answer for every emotion. From Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini to Helen – every star looked more promising with Pancham’s music.

It won’t be wrong to say that it was RD Burman because of whom today’s retro-style music is there. Many times, he crafted such tunes which were way ahead of his time, and people in that time couldn’t feel connected with it. And today? Most of his songs are repacked as remix versions, lacking the soul that his tunes used to have. Now they have just high beats.

Pancham Da’s music was experimental but connected to the heart. He created such a cocktail of Western and Indian classical that you can neither nod your head nor stop your heart after listening to it. And this is the reason that whether it is ‘Gulabi Aankhein’ or ‘Yeh Shaman Shaman Hai Pyar Ka’, R.D. Burman’s music is timeless.

Today, when we are in the 2020s, every second music show, every second film talent hunt stops with Pancham Da’s songs. Because Pancham Da’s music still sounds new, fresh. This is mastery.

Many musical Jodi’s have come and gone in Bollywood – but R.D. Burman and Asha Bhosle’s Jodi was something else altogether. They were not just together in the sound studio; they became each other’s music in life too. Where Pancham Da was the heartbeat, Asha Ji was the voice – and together they both created some of best hits of that era.

But did you know that there are some songs of this jodi that never came into limelight, but are gold for their fans?

  •  ‘Mujhe Jaan Na Kaho Meri Jaan’ – Film: Anubhav  1971

A song that would tear up any Lo-Fi playlist of today. The melody steeped in simplicity and Asha Ji’s softly flowing voice – Pancham Da’s minimalist masterpiece.

  •  ‘Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi Shikwa To Nahin’ – Aandhi  1975

A classic, yet underrated.  A story of incomplete love caught between politics and love – and Pancham Da gave such music which is still the national anthem of broken hearts.

Suspense, glamour, and seduction – R.D. Burman filled the suspense of the entire film in this one song. Pancham Da’s throbbing music is the life behind Helen’s dance moves.

  •  ‘Ek Haseena Thi’ – Karz  1980

Drama + thrill + music + rebirth theory = iconic. And till that last beat, Pancham Da gives you goosebumps.

Now let’s talk about the magic of that music which came from the heart of R.D. Burman. He had made instruments out of everything from the recording of sea waves to glass bottles. If anyone sees his studio diary, they will understand – he did not make music, he lived music.

And when Asha ji was with him, Pancham da’s style flowed even more. Be it the sexy disco of ‘Piya tu ab to aaja’ or the dreamy romance of ‘Chura liya hai tumne’ – the chemistry between these two was heard even outside the songs.

The story of R.D. Burman and Asha Bhosle was not just a music partnership, it was also a silent love story. He was known to get shy in the public, but the songs told what his heart wants.

And know this too: When R.D. Burman was not getting work in his last days, he still composed tunes that later turned out to be superhits. 1942: A Love Story was his last film, and what music he gave – ‘Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga’ is still every crush’s Instagram story caption.

When a retro track is remixed in today’s films, the first name that comes to mind is R.D. Burman. Why? Because Pancham Da’s songs did not just have beats, they had a ‘story in between’. He would fill such a great emotion in small tunes that the entire scene would come before the eyes as soon as the song was heard.

Today when we say “old is gold”, that gold is actually Pancham’s resonance. There is no single song that can define his versatility. Whether it is the melancholy of ‘Chalte Chalte’ or the seduction of ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja’ – Pancham Da was an expert in every color.

Someone has rightly said R.D. Burman gave music that was way ahead of its time. In those days, using synthesizers and electric guitars was not everyone’s cup of tea. But Pancham not only used it, but also connected it to the Indian soul.  And today when the world talks about fusion and experimental sounds, they should know that Pancham Da had started that revolution in India long ago. Bollywood

His tunes are still at the top of the reference playlist of directors and composers. Why? Because Pancham was not just an entertainer – he was an architect of emotion. He did not understand music, he lived it. Bollywood
