Indian music is a priceless treasure of gems that revitalizes us each time when we are down and stressed. Melodious Music that soothes us and relaxes us is, of course, the Golden Era Music composed by Music legends like NaushadO.P. NayyarShankar-JaikishanLaxmikant-PyarelalSD Burman, etc. Songs like Awaaz De Kahan Hai…. Hawa Mein Udta Jaye Mera Laal Dupatta Malmal Ka… Awaara Hoon …. Mera Joota Hai Japani…… Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya……. Gaata Rahe Mera Dil…… Baharon Phool Barsao……. Roop Tera Mastana….etc are superlative songs that are evergreen even if we listen to them countless times!

The Craze Of Music

It is this craze for Music among Indian fans that ‘Music’ in Indian cinema plays a lion’s share in the success of a movie since the inception of Indian films. Even today, no commercial cinema is complete without Music. The craze for Music is so vital that filmmakers pay a huge amount to music directors and singers. In fact, there are several instances when film producers have forced Music directors to bluntly copy tunes from the West to cash on hit songs. Indian Film History (IFH), hereunder exposes how even the legendary film music directors have stolen hit tunes from the west to create successful songs and satisfy the film producers.

Naushad The Musical Legend

In India, Music legend, Naushad is considered Monarch of Music. He won the first Filmfare Award for his timeless Music in Baiju Bawra (1952). Also, Naushad holds the record history of selling maximum music records for his super hit film Rattan (1944). He is the first music director to achieve 35 silver jubilee hits, 12 golden jubilees, and 3 diamond jubilee mega successes. The Indian Government saluted his contribution to film music by bestowing the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan in 1981.

Thus Naushad is looked upon with high esteem and has a clean image as an original Music Composer. However, film historians in their study have discovered that even Naushad has stains in his sleeves of copying West tunes.

Naushad Used ‘Elqamh Al Layla’

Naushad used the tune of an Arabic song Elqamh Al Layla… sung by Nour el Houda and Abdul Wahhab (1947) and made a super hit song into Meraa Salaam Le Ja Dil Kaa Payaam Le Ja…. Udan Khatole Vaale Aa Re Rahi… for the hit film Udan Khatola (1955) starring Dilip Kumar and Nimmi.

Another song Jab Nain Mile Naino Se … from the film Jadoo (1951) staring Nalini Jaywant is allegedly been copied by Naushad from the song Dance Scene from the film (Love Of Carmen -1948).

Historians discovered only two copied songs by Naushad. This proves he is one of the new truly original music directors who believed in Indian Classical music.

Naushad never stuck solely to Hindustani Classical Music. He said, ‘Dar-E- Ghair Par Bhiik Mango Na Fan Ki; Jab Apne Hi Ghar Mein Khanzane Bahut Hai!’  (Do not beg at other places for music when we have a treasure of Music in our own house!)
