Bollywood witnessed the rise of superstars when the culture began to emerge in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This period became synonymous with blockbuster films and massive success. Here’s a look at some of the stars who went on to dominate the Hindi film industry. But further we may face Bollywood crisis.

Earlier, the golden era of Bollywood—between 1940 and 1960—saw legendary actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Rajendra Kumar rise to fame.

Bollywood’s First Superstar Who Ruled Hearts

Audiences considered Rajesh Khanna the first superstar of Bollywood, as he captivated them from the 1960s to the 1970s with his charming looks and romantic films. He romanced every top heroine of those times.

Amitabh Bachchan emerged as the Angry Young Man that suited his powerful screen presence and he went on to take over the superstar tag.

People also consider Akshay Kumar one of the superstars of Bollywood. Then the rise of the Khans between the year 1980 to 1990 saw. The Khan Era dominated the film industry for several years.

The Decline of Bollywood’s Superstar Era

Audiences turned Shah Rukh Khan into a superstar with his romantic roles in films like Deewana, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, and Yes Boss, and they often refer to him as King Khan or the King of Bollywood. This Bollywood crisis are coming before time

Their films even had the fan loyalty, which let them control the industry creatively with their films like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak had QSQT and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as DDLJ. The abbreviations were good enough,  which became very popular among the masses as their names alone could fetch a packed theatre and success stories at the Box Office collection.

Bollywood Fading in the Age of OTT

However, this box office dominance alone may no longer be enough to keep theaters packed, as superstars might not retain their hold for much longer. This may raise the Bollywood crisis, Meanwhile, upcoming actors are gaining prominence on OTT platforms with strong, content-driven films.

This raises a critical question: Will it be the end of an era? And more importantly, will these superstars have successors like the veteran actors once did?

There could be several reasons for this shift. Notably, the digital world has diminished the aura that once surrounded these stars. As a result, we are witnessing a gradual decline in the superstar culture, primarily because fans now have easier and more frequent access to their favorite celebrities than ever before.
