We talk about the film that begins with a  flashback where Ashwini Kumar (Dilip Kumar) a retired Police officer, lives with his wife Sheetal (Raakhee) & their son Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan). The film shows Ashwini Kumar waiting at the Railway Station for his grandson Ravi (Anil Kapoor) to arrive. He wants to become a police officer when Ashwini Kumar tells him his life story.

 A gangster J.K. Verma (Amrish Puri), kidnaps Vijay when he‘s small. Verma strikes to deal with Ashwini Kumar, but the honest officer refuses it. Vijay overhears this, starts hating his father, and hurt, grows up to be a criminal.On the way he meets Rima (Smita Patil) they fall in love and have respect for each other and they start living together. She gets pregnant and gives birth to a son Ravi.

Ashwini Kumar is given the task to track Vijay(Amitabh Bachchan) which he does , shoots him ,runs towards him teary eyed. Vijay asks for forgiveness but dies. Ashwini Kumar quits his job. Ravi in the end still decides that he wants to become a police officer.
