Indian Film History celebrates and tributes the sportspersons on National Sports Day who have worked hard and outshone in their respective fields. All of these individuals have made the country proud but are still unknown to a few. Our filmmakers have managed to recognize many of these unsung heroes’ life journeys and help them become household names. Based on the life of Mir Ranjan Negi, a field hockey player and former goalkeeper of the India men’s national field hockey team. Chak de India features Shah Rukh Khan. He plays Kabir Khan, who becomes the coach for the Indian national women’s hockey team after an uncertain incident in his career. Later on, he won the Hockey World Cup with his team of 16 young girls. The win of the team becomes historical and celebratory in the country.

3. Paan Singh Tomar (2012):

This Indian sports movie tells the story of Paan Singh Tomar, an Indian soldier turned rebel and athlete who becomes a seven-time national steeplechase champion. Irrfan Khan played the role of Paan Singh Tomar in the movie. Paan Singh Tomar premiered at the London Film Festival in 2010.

4. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013):

A biographical film based on the life of Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete who overcame incredible odds to become a national champion and compete in the 1960 Olympics. The role of Milkha Singh is effortlessly played by Farhan Akhtar. Sonam Kapoor plays the love interest in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

5. Mary Kom (2014):

Mary Kom is a Hindi-language biographical Indian sports movie based on the life of boxer Mary Kom. The lead role of Mary Kom is played by Priyanka Chopra. Along with her, Darshan Kumar and Sunil Thapa were seen in supporting roles as her husband and mentor.

6. M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016):

This biopic explores the life of a real Indian player, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, one of India’s most successful cricket captains, highlighting his early struggles and rise to fame. Sushant Singh Rajput has played Dhoni’s character in the movie. This movie is one of the biggest hits of Sushant Singh Rajput’s career.


7. Azhar (2016):

A biographical Indian sports movie on the life of former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin. The movie explores his cricketing achievements and personal life controversies. Emraan Hashmi plays the lead character along with Prachi Desai and Nargis Fakhri.


8. Sachin: A Billion Dreams (2017):

A documentary-style biopic that traces the life and career of Sachin Tendulkar, one of the greatest cricket players in history.


9. Dangal (2016):

Based on the true story of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trained his daughters, Geeta and Babita, to become world-class wrestlers. This story challenges societal norms. The movie features Amir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Sanya Malhotra.


10. Soorma (2018):

The film narrates the life of Sandeep Singh, a real Indian hockey player who made a remarkable comeback after a life-threatening injury. Diljit Dosanjh plays the character of Sandeep Singh. Angad Bedi and Taapsee Pannu play prominent roles in the movie as well.


11. Panga (2020):

A heartwarming story of a former national-level kabaddi player who makes a comeback in the sport while balancing her family responsibilities. Kangana Ranaut plays the character of Jaya Nigam.


12. 83 (2021):

83 is a biographical sports movie that narrates the life story of Kapil Dev. The movie specifically focuses on the Indian national cricket team led by Kapil Dev, which won the 1983 Cricket World Cup. The character of Kapil Dev is played by Ranveer Singh along with him, the supporting cast includes Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem etc.


13. Saina (2021):

A biopic on the life of Saina Nehwal, one of India’s most accomplished badminton players, showcasing her struggles and achievements in the sport. The character of Saina is portrayed by Parineeta Chopra.
