It’s not just Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon… But lyricist Kavi Pradeep has been an undisputed monarch of patriotic song. He has to his credit many patriotic songs that became a huge hit. For instance, in the ’40s Kavi Pradeep created history when he penned the hit song Door hatoon aye duniya walo Hindustan hamara hain…. The song played a key role in the huge success of the Bombay Talkies movie film Kismet (1943) starring Ashok Kumar.

The fiery patriotic number generated such fervor amidst cine-goers that they thronged cinema halls again and again just to hear the song. Old-timers revel that when the song blazed the screen, the audience would stand up and sing in tandem with the song. Sometimes they even forced the theater management to rewind the song!!! Thus, the song played a lion’s share in the box office collection, which resulted in making a huge hit! The movie ran about 200 weeks consecutively in one of Kolkata’s cinema halls.

Songs That Stirred a Nation: Kavi Pradeep’s Unmatched Contribution

Kavi Pradeep was a Hindi Kavi and a famous name at Kavi Sammelan. It was during a Kavi Sammelan in Mumbai that filmmaker Himanshu Rai of Bombay Talkies heard him and signed him to write songs for his film Kangan (1939). The songs of the film Kangan were hits; hence, producer S. Mukherjee signed him for his film Bandhan (1940) starring Ashok Kumar, the superstar of the ’40s. It was in Bandhan that Kavi Pradeep wrote his first patriotic song for Hindi cinema. The song Chal Chal Re Naujawan …  became a terrific hit and played a key role in generating patriotic fervor for the Indian freedom movement.

After this, Kavi wrote many hit patriotic songs like Aao Bachcho Tumhein Dikhayen, De Dee Hame Azaadi Bina Khadag Bina Dhaal, and Hum laye hain toofan se kishti nikal ke, is desh ko rakhna mere bachon sambhal kke…  … in the film Jagriti (1954).

Kavi Pradeep always believed in writing songs with meaningful lyrics and made sure the songs he wrote fit into the situation of the movie. The popularity of his songs was also due to his down-to-earth lyrics and simple language that was well understood by everyone.

For his distinguished poetry, the government of India awarded him with the title of Rashtrakavi (Poet Laureate). Besides, the Indian government also honored him with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for Lifetime Achievement and saluted his contribution to Hindi poetry and Hindi cinema with an India Post commemorative stamp.
