However, the true birth of the Indian film industry started with the release of the film Raja Harishchandra a full length first feature film. There were many earlier experiments by filmmakers like H.S Bhatavdekar who made The Wrestlers in 1899 which had captured a real wrestling match. Dadasaheb Torne had made the silent movie called the Shree Pundalik in 1912. But Indian Government recognized Raja Harishchandra as the first Indian feature film.
Thus, the Indian film industry began with the advent of silent films like Raja Harishchandra released for the first time in the year 1913.The notable film Alam Ara (1931) marked a significant milestone, being India’s first talkie film, revolutionizing Indian cinema. After decades the film industry has grown producing a wide array of films in various languages in India with Bollywood being the most prominent for its Hindi cinema.
