Initially, he wanted Dimple Kapadia for Satyam Shivam Sundaram and later for Ram Teri Ganga Maili, but she declined due to the revealing nature of the roles. Instead, Kapoor discovered Mandakini, a newcomer, for the lead in Ram Teri Ganga Maili, casting her opposite his son Rajiv Kapoor. Mandakini’s iconic waterfall scene in a sheer white saree became a hallmark of the film.

Raj Kapoor cast Mandakini (born Yasmeen Joseph) in film renaming her from her original screen name Madhuri. Her striking features, including green eyes, added to her appeal in the iconic film.
