would charge well and not be taken for granted for his writing. After all the film’s foundation depends on
the right script. So when he wrote for the super hit films like Deewar, or
Sholay or Hera Pheri, Majboor, Kranti or Mr. India—the films that went on to
become a super hit he did not hesitate to ask for his worth.

Javed wrote for the film Dostana, wherein for the very first time Shatrughan
Sinha and Amitabh Bachchan came into competition for this role. For this film
Amitabh Bachchan charged Rs. 70 Lakhs, whereas the writer Salim Khan demanded
Rs. 75 Lakhs and in Bollywood this was the first time the scriptwriter had
charged higher than the leading actor and thus gave the scriptwriters writers a new
stand in the film industry.
