The first time of anything is kind of hard to forget. Parwana was such a film for Amitabh Bachchan. A future superstar had never done a negative role before. He played a negative character in this film in 1971 for the first time and after that he played a negative again after 31 years in Aankhen (2002). Not only that, but also this was the first film Amitabh had to sing and dance in. He found it extremely difficult.
Jyoti Swaroop directed the psychological film Parwana, casting Amitabh Bachchan as the villain opposite Navin Nischol. Amitabh played a lover turned villain turned killer in this film. He also tried singing and dancing together for the first time in O Jameela Chhammak Chhallo. In Big B’s own words, this was very difficult for him, but as we know, it helped him to be amorer versatile actor than anyone else.
Amitabh Bachchan’s 1971 film Parwana showcased his versatility as an actor, marking one of his early appearances in a negative role. Directed by Jyoti Swaroop, the psychological thriller revolves around Kumar Sen, an artist infatuated with Asha, played by Yogeeta Bali. Bachchan’s portrayal of Kumar’s obsessive love, which turns into murderous rage, was notable, especially given his relatively unknown status at the time. The film’s intricate plot, featuring a complex murder plan and clever alibis, added to its suspenseful nature. Although Parwana wasn’t a major commercial success, it demonstrated Bachchan’s range and foreshadowed his future success in Bollywood. Interestingly, this role allowed him to experiment with his craft early in his career, diverging from typical hero archetypes. Parwana remains an intriguing footnote in Bachchan’s illustrious career, highlighting his willingness to take on unconventional roles.
