‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’ Is India’s First Film To Win A Hollywood ‘Golden Globe Award

Film legend V Shantaram is regarded as one of the pillars of Indian cinema. His film Do Aankhen Barah Haath holds the distinction of being the first Hindi feature film to win the prestigious Golden Globe award. It won in the under the Samuel Goldwyn category. The Golden Globe Awards are America’s most prestigious awards. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has presented them since 1944. The award recognizes excellence in Hollywood films and television. They also have a special category to honor Best Film Foreign under Samuel Goldwyn category.  It is a salutation to the legendary Polish-American film producer, who made several Hollywood hit classics.

Besides winning the International Golden Globe Award, Do Aankhen Barah Haath also won a Silver Bear Extraordinary Prize by the Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival. In addition, the film won two National Film Awards viz. Best Feature Film (All over India) and Best Feature Film in Hindi.

V Shantaram’s Career’s Major Highlight

Filmmaker V Shantaram became immortal with his Black/White classic, Do Aankhein Bara Haath . He won top place among stalwarts such as Bimal RoyRaj KapoorMehboob Khan and Guru DuttDo Aankhein Bara Haath depicted universal concepts of love and brotherhood.

The film was based on a true story of an ‘open prison’ started in Swatantrapur,  Aundh Satara, Maharashtra. It showed an honest police inspector. He took the challenge of reforming criminals through freedom in an open prison, not incarceration. The officers reforms six convicts in an open plot, transforming  them into good, law-abiding citizens through love and affection.

Do Aankhein Bara Haath’s Plus Point

The movie’s greatest plus point besides a tight script was its music, particularly; the song Ae Maalik Tere Bande Hum…… with its eternal message of love and compassion became a rage across the country, and in neighboring Pakistan too! The was remade in many languages Maa Daivam (Telugu)  Pallandu Vazhga (Tamil). In fact, even Ramesh Sippy‘s Sholay and Subhash Ghai‘s Karma are inspired by Do Aankhen Barah Haath.
