Akshay Kumar Revolutionized Biopics By Exploring Socially Awakening Subjects—Part 5

With biopics minting money at the box office, filmmakers dared to explore new subjects that were inspirational, creating social awareness and really hatke. Interestingly, the actor who showed faith in such unique subjects was Akshay Kumar, who literally brought a revolution in biopics, as his biopics told stories that were rousing and really heroic.

Socially Relevant Cinema: Akshay Kumar Notable Works

Akshay Kumar started with Airlift (2016). The film portrayed Mathunny Mathews’ heroic role in evacuating 170,000 Indians from Kuwait during the 1990 invasion. Akshay Kumar’s film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017) tackled the taboo subject of women’s toilet access in rural India. The story was inspired by Anita Narre’s real-life experience. Akshay’s next film, PadMan (2018), addressed menstrual hygiene, achieving huge success.

The film highlighted Arunachalam Muruganantham’s innovative low-cost sanitary napkins. Made on a shoestring budget of ₹20 crore, it earned ₹216 crore in India. Akshay’s subsequent films, Gold (2018) and Kesari, also achieved success, telling the stories of India’s hockey team and the heroic Battle of Saragarhi.

Meghna Gulzar’s film Talvar (2015) sparked debate on the Aarushi double murder case. The movie highlighted loopholes in the Noida police investigation and contradictions in CBI reports.

Cinematic Storytelling: Akshay Kumar’s Socially Awakening Films

Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy (2019) inspired parents to support their children’s artistic pursuits. The film, starring Ranveer Singh, is based on rappers Divine and Naezy. Similarly, Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar (2017) tells the story of a young singer’s dreams, inspired by Nahid Afrin’s experiences.

Madhuri Dixit starred in Gulaab Gang (2014), a film based on Sampat Pal, a social worker who formed a women’s gang to fight injustice and domestic violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Bundelkhand region. The film was an inspiration for several village ladies.

Other movies that deserve mention for spreading a social message through biopics are Alia Bhatt‘s Raazi (2018), Nandita Das‘ Bawandar (2000), Sonam Kapoor‘s Neerja (2016), Amitabh Bachchan’s Pink (2016), John Abraham’s Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran (2018), Shahid Kapoor’s Batti Gul Meter Chalu (2018), etc.
