Gandhi (1982) :

 

Gandhi, the biographical movie of Mohandas Karamchan Gandhi, is a 1982 epic biographical film based on his life, and how the leader of an Indian independence movement carries the whole nation against the British Empire during the 20th century. The movie was released by Columbia Pictures in India, United Kingdom and the United States of America. With a budget of $22 Million, this movie became a commercial success, after pulling a staggering amount of $127.8 Million. 

 

This movie majorly focuses on the details of Mahatma Gandhi’s early life, the depiction of his character during the freedom struggle, till his assassination. In fact, this movie received a lot of fame for being extremely accurate about Mahatma Gandhi’s life. The piece of beauty had gotten 11 nominations at the 55th Academy Awards, from which they massively won eight (this was even more than any other movie being nominated in that year).

Sanjay Baba, who plays an underworld gangster ‘Munna Bhai’, falls hopelessly in love with Janhvi, who is a radio show host, and she also runs an old age home. An unethical builder takes over the old age home, evicting the poor residents with the help of Munna’s sidekick, Circuit. When all of this keeps on going, Munna’s focus entirely remains on maintaining his romantic relationship with Jahnvi. Munna, specialises as a professor in the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Baba now has to tackle the situation against his very own forces and the builder. However there is one person on his side- the great man, Mahatma Gandhi himself! Munna, played by Sanjay Dutt, faces a daunting challenge: explaining Mahatma Gandhi’s existence to everyone.

Gandhi My Father (2007) :

 

Produced by Bollywood veteran actor Anil Kapoor, Gandhi My Father is another iconic piece of art which was released on the 3rd of August, 2007. Starring Darshan Jariwala, Akshaye Khanna, and Bhumika Chawla, this masterpiece helps us understand about the troubled relationship between Mahatma Gandhi, and his son Harilal Gandhi.

 

 

‘Gandhi My Father’ has painted a clear picture of Mahatma Gandhi’s strained, and extremely difficult relationship with Harilal Gandhi, his son. Harilal wanted to pursue further studies abroad, but his father, Gandhi, had different plans. Gandhi envisioned Harilal joining him in the freedom struggle, while Harilal had his own aspirations.

Gandhi to Hitler (2011) :

 

The movie ‘Dear Friend Hitler’ was released all over India, as Gandhi to Hitler’. This is a 2011 movie, which is based on the war-drama and certain letters drafted by Mahatma Gandhi to Adolf Hitler, as he was always against his violent, vicious activities. 

 

The Nazi German Dictator Adolf Hitler had been helping the Azad Hind Fauj, which was bravely led by Subhas Chandra Bose. This Fauj consisted of members who had become impatient with many of Mahatma Gandhi’s strategies of Non-Violence, against the cruel British Rulers. Gandhi drafted the first letter to Adolf Hitler at his friends’ request. However, Hitler’s stubborn acts provoked Gandhi to write a second letter, which he fired off in frustration. Though the two never met, Gandhi explains in his December 24, 1940, letter why he addressed Hitler as a “Friend”.

A 2000 criminal drama movie, which is totally written, directed and produced by the legendary Kamal Haasan, was made in Tamil and Hindi languages at the same time!. 

 

 

This beautiful piece of art, is a fictional Indian drama that depicts the story of Saketh Ram (also played by Kamal Hassan), who is under the impression that he tries to kill Mohandas Gandhi (played by Naseeruddin Shah). Hey Ram was not successful at the box office! However, it became a ‘critical darling’. This movie also has a semi-fictional take towards the partition of India during 1947, and provides us with some controversy about the assassination of Gandhi as well. Even though this movie had a star-packed cast, including Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji, it was not a commercial success back in the day. “Hey Ram” stands as a classic hit in Indian film history, making it a must-watch.
