10 Bollywood movies that depict the era of British rule in India

India’s had a long legacy of struggle for freedom against the British Rule. While we all are aware of the fight for our independence and have the documented the subject, films in Bollywood have explore the diverse aspects during the freedom movement. 

There are Indian films which have showcased stories that have not only filled us with pride but it has documented the struggle of our freedom fighters based on the true stories. The filmmakers have evoked the emotion of patriotism in its true essence taking us all viewers back in the British Raj as it was called .

These films also have depicted the characters of real-life Indian revolutionaries in their films.  Some of the films have described diverse historical dramas to fictionalized narratives exploring various themes like the colonialism, resistance and the impact of British rule on India and the citizens of India. 

While there are many books on the British Rule and the freedom fight etc., there is nothing as exciting to watch a film that one can resonate instantly by the emotions and the realistic acting of the actors and the locations used for these films.

Some of the notable films included Gandhi released in 1982,  A Passage to India in 1984, Lagaan in 2001 and may others.

Let’s take a detailed look at some of the films that were not just award winning but also tells us a story of India’s independence movement . 

Gandhi – 1982

Gandhi won the Academy Award for the film  that tells us  story of Mahatma Gandhi’s life and his role during the Independence movement.   The film had a star cast of British- India , starring Ben Kingsley , John Gielgud, Candice Bergen and Edward Fox. The film traced back the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi which was directed by Richard Attenborough. The film tells us the story of the Gandhiji, the leader and his non-violent freedom movement against the British rule and his time spent in South Africa as a lawyer.   Ben Kingsley has delivered one of his most incredible performances as Gandhi for which he won the Best Actor Award the film also got a phenomenal eight awards at the Academy Awards in the year 1983.

Lagaan (2001):

Ashutosh Gowariker wrote and directed this epic sports drama film, which Aamir Khan produced. Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh play the pivotal roles of Bhuvan, alongside British actors Rachel Shelly and Paul Blackthorne. The film highlights the spirit of India and the impact the British Raj had due to the policies on rural life.  One such village in India challenges the British through a game of cricket match .The fictional film was more of a sports comedy drama . 

A group of villagers who challenge the British tyrant Captain Russel who had imposed heavy land taxes on the citizens of these poor villages.     Bhuvan a rebellious farmer decides to publicly oppose the tax and takes up the challenge that his men will play cricket against the British , when the game of cricket was a sport that was completely new to Indians. However, if you’d like to rephrase it for more emphasis or excitement, here’s an option:

Viceroy’s House – 2017 

Gurinder Chadha directed the historical drama Viceroy’s House, which she co-wrote with Paul Mayeda Berges. Starring in the film are Manish Dayal , Huma Qureshi and Hugh Bonneville with Gillian Anderson and Michale Gambon. The film explores the British rule in India, specifically the tumultuous period of power transfer and the tragic story of the subcontinent’s partition.

The film is set in the year 1947.  It revolved around India’s final Viceroy , Lord Louis Mountbatten and his role in the transition from British rule to the Indian independence. 

The films focused on the patriotism, rebellion and the social commentary

Mangal Paney :The Rising – 2005

This is a biographical film on the sepoy Mangal Pandey who had sparked the 1857 rebel against the British East India Company. The British is said to have been plundering the resources of their Indian subjects .  It was a breaking point when the soldier Mangal Pandey essayed by Aamir Khan leads a revolt against the imperialist occupiers. The Indians called it a war for independence while the British called it a mutiny.  The film had violent events. Mangal Panday establishes friendship with Captain William Gordon essayed by Toby Stephens who offers sympathy to India’s dominated and conquered citizens . He decides to help and obey his conscience.

Rang De Basanti – 2006

Rang De Basanti released in 2006 . A British filmmaker Alice Patten wants to cast a group of young graduates from Delhi University to represent freedom fighters .    Although they had no politics in their mind,  an untimely death of a friend due to the local  government corruption awakens them the patriotic spirt in each of them while enacting the role of freedom fighters in the film by the filmmaker.  The friends decide to take their role seriously to avenge the death of their friend. In the film, a British student travels to India to document the freedom movement, sparking a desire in local students to challenge their own government’s injustices.

Rang De Basanti was globally released on the 26th January in 2006

The Legend of Bhagat Singh – 2002

This biopic film focuses on the life of the prominent Indian revolutionary Bhagat Singh. The film showcases Bhagat Singh’s role in India’s fight for independence. Witnessing injustice as a child under British rule inspired Bhagat Singh to become a freedom fighter. Witnessing the atrocities committed by the British, he organized protests and hunger strikes.

The true story of Bhagat Singh unfolds as he leads a violent struggle against British rule, growing increasingly disappointed with Gandhi’s passive movement. Ultimately, he is convicted and sentenced to death. Through the film, we see Bhagat Singh’s life struggles, determination, and ideologies, as well as his dreams for a progressive nation.

The film has depicted Bhagat Singh’s life struggles and his determination with his ideologies and the ideas for a progressive nation that he dreams of . He thus moves the entire nation.

Border – 1997

Border was based on the Battle of Longewala Indo Pak War in 1971. The story is about a small battalion of Indian soldiers who go up against the 2000 well-armed Pakistani force.   The soldiers have to defend their post all night until they receive assistance from the Indian Air Force. The action-packed film highlights the camaraderie and sacrifices of the Indian soldiers .

The movie dramatizes the true story of Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, who led 120 soldiers against 3000 Pakistani troops in an epic two-day battle. J P Dutta made the film as a tribute to his brother , a pilot in the Indian Air Force who had died in a plane crash.   While the film is based on with real events it also has included the dramatic liberties and some fictionalized storyline to make it a typical Bollywood film.  Border highlights the bravery of Indian soldiers and evokes the strong sense of patriotism and national pride as you watch the film.  It has explored the sacrifices of the soldier’s families as well from the emotional point of view of the relationships with the family in the face of overwhelming odds they have to through on the front.

Thugs of Hindostan – 2018

In this historical film, the East India Company enlists Firangi, a cunning thief, to spy on Azaad’s bandits, putting Firangi in a precarious position between loyalty and deception. The film is a great lesson about India before it got its freedom and when British ruled India.

Kesari – 2019

The film Kesari is a historical action film. Starring in the film is Akshay Kumar and it’s directed by Anurag Singh.   A turn of events that follow leading to the Battle of Saragarhi , a battle between the Sikh Soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment from the British Army who invaded and attacked 10,000 Afridi and Orakzai  Pashtun tribes in the year 1987. The 21 soldiers defended the fort against a large size of enemies during the Anglo Sikh War.

Manikarnika :The Queen of Jhansi – 2019

Manikarnika , the wife of the King of Jhansi, refuses to bow down to the East India Company when they try to get an extension the kingdom.  She turns out to be a rebellion with a fiery attack against the British Raj .  In this film, Krish Jagarlamudi brings to life the story of Rani Lakshmibai, with Kangana Ranaut delivering a powerful performance as the iconic queen.

The story of Rani Lakshmibai, the Queen of Jhansi is one of the leading Indian Rebellion of 1857 during the British Rule.   The East India Company seeing a woman as the heir, decides to conquer Jhansi as it does not have a male ruler. However, the film depicts Lakshmi Bai’s gallant approach and she fights herself for the throne of Jhansi .

Shamshera – 2022

The film Shamshera is an action film that explores the theme of revolution and the struggles during the India’s freedom against the backdrop of the British Rule.  The film emerged as a box office failure due to the mixed reviews.   The film traces back to 1896, on Khamera tribal Balli who aspires to be a cop.  The story follows the captivity of an oppressed warrior during the British Raj.  This period drama action film is produced by Aditya Chopra under the Yash Raj films and is directed by Karan Malhotra.
