Let’s go on a beautiful throwback to the most iconic dance numbers from Bollywood as well as Tollywood. Those were not merely performances of steps. They displayed expression, passion, and genuine love of dance. Let’s revisit some of those moments that kept Indian cinema a magical place.

Iconic Dance Sequences in Bollywood

Mithun Chakraborty – I Am a Disco Dancer (Disco Dancer, 1982)

This film was in Hindi, and Mithun Chakraborty, a Bengali star, became a national hero thanks to this dance. With his disco gyrations, glittery clothes, and lightning-fast turns, he transformed Indian dance. This is the song that came to personify the 80s, and Mithun symbolized that.

Madhuri Dixit – “Ek Do Teen” (Tezaab, 1988)

This song turned Madhuri Dixit into a star. It was a super duper hit—being a song that had it all—a dancer with pitch-perfect expressions, twangy moves, and music that “stuck”—“Ek Do Teen.” Every girl wished they could dance like her, and all stage performances mimicked this song. Even today, the choreography by Saroj Khan is much spoken about. This dance was pure energy, beauty, and innocence.

Prabhudeva – Muqabala (Hum Se Hai Muqabala, 1994)

Prabhudeva, also known as the “Michael Jackson of India,” had everyone shocked with his speed and robotic moves. No one had ever seen such flexible, fast and creative dancing in an Indian movie, and since then, Muqabala is famous in dance schools.

Karisma Kapoor – Le Gayi (Dil To Pagal Hai, 1997)

Karisma Kapoor brought more fun to the 90s vibe, and the dance was such fun for all dance lovers. It was her high energy and expressions that made the song loved by all. Karisma knew the ’90s, and her clothes and her new pink outfit made most girls love her.

Govinda – What Is Mobile Number (Haseena Maan Jaayegi, 1999)

Govinda was always fun on the dance floor. His brightly colored clothes, sprightly feet, and timing brought smiles to every performance. His dance in “What Is Mobile Number” was catchy and uncomplicated. Everyone could do the Twist, and it became a street-dance favorite.

Aishwarya Rai – Nimbooda (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999)

Looking stunning in a blue lehenga, Aishwarya Rai danced with all her vigour and grace. “Nimbooda” was rooted in Rajasthani folk style but had Bollywood gloss thrown into the mix. Her beautiful spins and expressive eyes, combined with her graceful footwork, made this dance memorable. The song is still often played at traditional occasions, cultural nights during Navratri, and weddings.

Hrithik Roshan – “Ek Pal Ka Jeena” (Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, 2000)

His dance was an instant hit in Bollywood when Hrithik came in. “Ek Pal Ka Jeena” ushered in a new style—swaggy, sharp moves and a flawless rhythm. His hand-clap step became so popular that people from schools to weddings were using it. This song was clear proof Bollywood had found its new dancing star.

Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol – Suraj Hua Maddham (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, 2001)

This song was not about fast steps. This song was so slow, and the characters came up with a slow and flowing song. The desert was the backdrop, and Shah Rukh and Kajol had the best chemistry, and the Americanized dancing twirls and close-up dancing became one of the highlights.

Ranveer Singh – Malhari (Bajirao Mastani, 2015)

This dance was all about power. Ranveer Singh gives off such vibes from the power of a victorious king through his loud chants and strong movements; “Malhari” became an anthem of celebration. The famous chest-thump step and the high energy made it the most loved song at every school function or reality show.

Deepika Padukone – Deewani Mastani (Bajirao Mastani, 2015)

This song was not fast, but it was full of elegance. Deepika looked like a royal Somali queen, and her dance was filled with calming grace. Every move was controlled and redefining elegance. The background setup, lights, and costume, adding magic to the song, became the most beautiful dance visual in the Bollywood industry.

Nora Fatehi – “Dilbar” (Satyameva Jayate, 2018)

Nora took belly dancing into mainstream Bollywood. Her movements in “Dilbar” were pointed, sleek, and so attractive. This number was a cover, but her rendition made it feel entirely new. Nora became a household name, and her dance was on YouTube. Memorable Dance Sequences in Bengali Cinema

Suchitra Sen – Ei Poth Jodi Na Sesh Hoy (Saptapadi, 1961)

Seated on his motorcycle with Uttam Kumar, her hand movements and gentle expressions made the song memorable. It turned into a figure of love and liberation in Bengali cinema.

Rituparna Sengupta – “Tumi Ele Tai” (Praner Cheye Priyo, 1998)
